勅ありて。御くすし和氣清元を。伊賀
につかはされしに
勅定のかたしけなさは。さる御事なれ共。
生死無常のすみやかなることは。世を
捨人の。かねておもひまうくる所にとて。
頭をふりてこれをうけす。清元もせんか
たなくて。都にかへりかくと奏しけり。

【右丁】
勅命があって、御典医・和気清元を伊賀へお遣わしになったところ、
（兼好は）「勅命のご厚意はもったいないことではございますが、生死無常のすみやかなることは、世を捨てた者があらかじめ心得ておくべきことでございます」と言って、頭を振ってこれを受けなかった。清元もどうしようもなく、都に帰り、その旨を（天皇に）奏上した。
二条殿下（良基公）はこれをお聞きになり、ご心配の

念があって、（兼好が）引きこもっていらっしゃるとのことを（触れ回り）、ひそかに彼の国（伊賀）へお下りになられて、お名残の御物語などがあって、（京へ）お帰りになった。自然と（その話が）伝わって、人々もそれを聞いた。「長年、和歌のお友として（兼好を）お召しになり、お側においていらっしゃったゆえでしょうか、まことにありがたい（深い）お心遣いであった」と言って、皆涙を落とした。同（二月）十八日——

An imperial decree was issued, and the court physician Wake no Kiyomoto was dispatched to Iga. However, (Kenkō replied,) "Though the imperial decree is a most gracious and humbling act of kindness, the swiftness of impermanence — the coming of death — is something that one who has renounced the world ought to have prepared for in advance," and he shook his head and declined the offer. Kiyomoto, having no recourse, returned to the capital and reported the matter to (the Emperor).
His Excellency the Lord of Nijō (Lord Yoshimoto), upon hearing this, with great concern,

and having it announced that (Kenkō) was confined to his quarters in retreat, quietly made his way down to that province (Iga), where they exchanged parting words and reminiscences, after which (Lord Yoshimoto) returned (to the capital). Word of this naturally spread, and people came to hear of it. "Perhaps it was because he had for so many years kept (Kenkō) close, summoning him as a companion in waka poetry — truly it was a most rare and deeply felt act of kindness," (they said,) and everyone shed tears.
