……それ以上のことは聞けずじまいになってしまいました。それから退出して帰ってからも、ただあの方の面影だけが目に浮かぶようで、忘れることができません。物悲しい気持ちで部屋に籠もって物思いに沈んでいると、降り積もる雪もわが思いに重ね合わせてしまいそうです。
降り積む雪に道こそなけれ、吉野山
誰が踏み分けて思い入ったのだろう
我ながら、浮気心のある心だなあ。ほんの少し見かけただけなのに……

Feeling forlorn, he shut himself away and fell into melancholy reverie — and even the snow as it continued to fall seemed to him something he might liken to his own accumulated longing:

*on Mount Yoshino,*
*who was it that pressed through the drifts,*
*lost in deep thought?*
How fickle my own heart is, he thought to himself — and yet all this from having glimpsed her for but a moment...
