現代語訳
強がり上戸
強がりの酒飲みは世の中に多いものである。
梅雨が続いて湿っぽい季節、相手の遊女が気の利かない返事をするので不機嫌になり、芸子や太鼓持ちが座を盛り上げられないでいるのを、機転の利く仲居がその強がりを見抜いて、ちょっと触れただけでころりと倒れ、ぶつかっただけですぐに倒れてしまう。
「手や体がしびれる。どうしてそのように力強く生まれたのですか」
見え透いた手練に太鼓持ちが合点して「旦那様が一番」と枕を引いて座らせ、「相撲を取ったら体が砕けてしまいます」
芸子たちも調子を合わせて「限界まで指を引っ張って指が痛い」と、みんなでかかって持ち上げるのに。
宝岩（客の名前）は大いに機嫌を直して、さてそれからの強がり自慢。「和藤内が大変な戦いを攻めた時よりももっと凄まじい鉄砲の当たりどころ。闇夜での話は言いたい放題。」
さて、扱いやすいよい客である。

The Bragging Drinker
Bragging drinkers are numerous in this world.
During the continued rainy season when things are damp and gloomy, when his courtesan companion gives uninteresting replies, he becomes sullen, and while the geishas and entertainers fail to enliven the gathering, a clever serving woman sees through his bluffing. With just a light touch he tumbles over, and with the slightest bump he falls right down.
"My hands and body are numb. How were you born with such great strength?"
The entertainer, understanding this transparent trick, agrees: "Master, you are the strongest!" and pulls out a pillow for him to sit on. "If we were to wrestle, my whole body would be crushed!"
The geishas also play along: "Just pulling fingers to the limit makes my fingers hurt," as everyone works together to build him up.
Hōgwan (the customer's name) greatly improves his mood, and then begins his boastful bragging: "More tremendous than when Watōnai attacked in that great battle - such fierce gunfire hits! In the dark of night, one can say whatever one pleases."
Indeed, he is an easy and profitable customer to handle.
