慇勤（ゐんぎん）上戸（じやうご）
ゐんぎん上戸（じやうご）といふは酒癖（さけのくせ）の一（ひと）ツ（つ）なり
かの過（すぎ）たるは及（およは）ざるにしかじと
やらん喧嘩（けんくわ）上戸（じやうご）おこり上戸（じやうご）よりは
少（すこ）しましなれども酒（さけ）に酔（よひ）てのゐん
ぎんはこと〴〵く馬鹿（ばか）ゐんぎんにて人（ひと）を
こまらする事（こと）甚（はなはだ）し少（すこ）し酔（よひ）が
まわるにしたがひ割（わり）ひざの膝（ひざ）
かしらをあらわしまわらぬ
舌（した）にて慇勤（いんぎん）を演（のべ）ることべん
べんとしてあたかも薬（くすり）地黄（ちおう）
せんをひつはるにひとしく我前に
呑（のみ）さしてある盃（さかづき）を打（うち）わすれ一座（いちざ）
の酒客（しゆかく）に退窟（たいくつ）をおこさせ肴（さかな）
はさむ度事（たびこと）に箸（はと）をいた
だき人（ひと）の咄（はな）しはひとつも耳（みゝ）へ
入らず合客（あ きやく）も大躰（だいてい）は
付合（つきあ）ふて見れと
後（のち）にはおもひ〳〵の
上気（うわき）はなしかの慇（ゐん）
勤（ぎん）を合手（あひて）にせねどゐん勤（ぎん）
さけの得（とく）には気（き）にもさわらず酌（しやく）に

現代語訳
慇懃上戸
慇懃上戸というのは酒癖の一つである。かの「過ぎたるは及ばざるが如し」というように、喧嘩上戸や怒り上戸よりは少しましではあるが、酒に酔っての慇懃は全くの馬鹿慇懃で、人を困らせることが甚だしい。少し酔いが回るにしたがって正座を崩し、回らない舌で慇懃を述べることがべらべらと、まるで薬の地黄煎を引っ張るように長々と続く。自分の前にある飲みかけの盃のことは忘れて、一座の酒客に退屈を起こさせ、肴を箸でつまむ度に箸を持ち上げて礼をし、人の話は一つも耳に入らず、同席の客も大抵は付き合って見せているが、後にはそれぞれ勝手な浮気話をする。
かの慇懃を相手にしないが、慇懃は酒の効果で気にも留めず、酌に出ているのに酔っぱらって、土を相手に何やら慇懃に聞こえない話をしているのを見ると、本当に気の毒だと思うけれども、人それぞれ酒の癖は誰人も逃れがたいものであるから、下戸の馬鹿慇懃をするよりはかわいらしいものである。

The Overly Polite Drinker
The overly polite drinker represents one type of drinking behavior. As the saying goes, "excess is as bad as deficiency" - while slightly better than quarrelsome drinkers or angry drinkers, when drunk, their politeness becomes completely foolish politeness that greatly troubles others. As they become more intoxicated, they abandon proper sitting posture, and with their slurred tongue, they drone on and on with excessive politeness, much like drawing out a medicinal rehmannia decoction at great length. They forget about their own half-finished cup in front of them, causing boredom among the drinking companions, and every time they pick up food with chopsticks they lift them ceremoniously, not hearing a word of others' conversations. The other guests mostly pretend to go along with it, but eventually turn to their own frivolous conversations.
Though no one pays attention to this excessive politeness, the drunk person doesn't mind due to the alcohol's effects. Even when serving sake, they're so intoxicated they end up making incomprehensible polite speeches to the ground itself. While one feels truly sorry watching this, since everyone has their own inescapable drinking habits, it's more endearing than a teetotaler's foolish attempts at politeness.
