ゆるぎはためきければ日用（ひよう）どもは地しんとは思ひ
もよらずうちくだく仏（ほとけ）の罰（ばち）あたりてたゞいま
無間（むけん）地ごく【後世は「むげんじごく」とも。八熱地獄の第八番目、最下底の地獄】におつるとこゝろえ【「江」あるいは「へ」」とあるところ】百人ばかりの日用（ひよう）
のものども一 同（どう）に聲をあげ手をすりて南無（なむ）
釋迦如来（しやかによらい）かやうにうちこはし奉る事われらが
こころよりおこる所にはさふらはず日用（ひよう）つかさ【司…役人】に
やとはれて下知（げぢ）【下知＝命令。いいつけ。】によりて打くだき奉る我らに
科（とが）はなきものをゆるさせ給【『くずし字用例辞典』には「給」の項に記載がありますが「たま」の合字にも見えます】へ〳〵とわびことす
る奉行（ぶぎやう）の者（もの）どもはいかにこれは地しんなるぞや
日用のものどもさはぐな〳〵といへども耳（みみ）にも
聞きいれずして仏の肩（かた）にのぼり御手のうへに

ともなくやう〳〵にげおりてこそ初めて地しん

揺れ動いたので、日雇いたちは地震とは思いもよらず、打ち砕く仏の罰が当たって今すぐ無間地獄に落ちるのだと心得て、百人ばかりの日雇いの者どもが一斉に声を上げ手を擦り合わせて「南無釈迦如来、このように打ち壊し申し上げることは我らが心より起こすところではございません。日雇い役人に雇われて命令によって打ち砕き申し上げるのです。我らに罪はないものをお許し下さい」と詫びることをする。奉行の者どもは「どうしたことか、これは地震であるぞ。日雇いの者ども騒ぐな」と言うけれども、耳にも聞き入れないで、仏の肩に登り御手の上に

上がっていた日雇いどもは、落ちるともなく飛ぶともなく、ようやく逃げ降りてこそ初めて地震なりと理解したのであった。ある日雇いの者がこのようにつぶやいた。
緩やかでないことを仏の罰と思ったことよ
地震と知っていれば軽く思ったであろうに

About a hundred day laborers all raised their voices at once, rubbing their hands together and pleading: "Namu Shakyamuni Buddha, destroying you in this way does not arise from our own hearts. We were hired by the day-labor officials and are breaking you apart by their orders. We have no sin in this—please forgive us." The magistrate officials said, "What is this? This is an earthquake! Day laborers, do not panic!" But the workers paid no attention, and those day laborers who had climbed onto the Buddha's shoulders and were perched on his hands

neither exactly fell nor flew, but somehow managed to flee and climb down, and only then did they finally realize it was an earthquake. One of the day laborers muttered this:
I thought this upheaval was Buddha's punishment
Had I known it was an earthquake, I would have thought it lighter
