地しんなりけるにも子細（しさい）なかりけるをこのたびの
大なゆ【「大なゐ」＝大地震のこと】にふりくづされ 塚（つか）はくづれ五 輪（りん）はたをれ
て其あとは深（ふか）きあなとなり侍へりけるとそ
ゆゝしけれ【いまいましい】ある人 穴（あな）の中へよみいれけり
耳塚（みゝづか）のおほくの耳（みゝ）よことゝはん
かゝる地しんを聞やつたへし
あなの底よりひゞき出ける音に返哥とおほしくて
もろこしもゆりやしぬらん大なゆに
今こそ耳（みゝ）のあなはあきけれ

現代語訳
地震であったにも理由がなかったのであるが、この度の大地震で振り崩され、塚は崩れ五輪塔は倒れて、その跡は深い穴となってしまったということである。
不吉なことに、ある人が穴の中へ詠み入れた。
耳塚の多くの耳よ、言葉を交わそう
このような地震を聞いたか、伝え聞いたか
穴の底から響き出てきた音に、返歌と思われるもので
唐土（もろこし）も揺れ動いたであろうか、大地震に
今こそ耳の穴は開いたことよ

It had been an earthquake without any particular reason, but in this great earthquake it was shaken and destroyed—the mound collapsed, the five-ring pagoda toppled over, and the site became a deep pit.
Ominously, someone composed a poem and called it into the pit:
O many ears of the Ear Mound, let us converse—
Did you hear or learn of such an earthquake as this?
From the bottom of the pit came a resonating sound, seeming to be a response poem:
Even China must have shaken in this great earthquake—
Now at last the ears' holes have opened!
