五条の石ばしもこのころはわたしおほせて假令（たとひ）
つか成事ありとも当来（たうらい）弥勒（みろく）出世（しゆつせ）の時代（じだい）【未来に出現するという弥勒菩薩が衆生を救うために仮にこの世にあらわれる時代】までも
ことゆへあらじ【無事である。別条がない。】とおもひけるに橋（はし）げた橋（はし）板（いた）蘭干（らんかん）まで廿 余間（よけん）おちたりけりこの時わたりかゝりし
人ありけるが一人は橋げたの石（いし）にうたれくだけ
ちりて死（しに）たりいま一人は西六条花や町のもの
とかや橋板のおつるにのりて下におちつきや
がて絶（たえ）いりしがひざのあたりすこし打やぶれ
たるばかりにてやう〳〵よみがへり夢のこゝち
してはう〳〵家にかへりぬ運（うん）のつよきものに
こそとてみづから大に【おおいに】よろこびいはゐごとしけ

るもことはり也 荷（に）おひたる馬ども橋づめに
おほくつどひあつたりけるがおほくの馬ども
一 同（どう）におそれてはねあがり立あがりて一あし
もゆかずひけどもうてどもすゝまざりけるは
橋のおつべき事をしりけるかと諸人 是（これ）を
あやしみけり

五条の石橋もこの頃は渡しを仰せつけられて、たとえ何か事があっても来世に弥勒菩薩が出世される時代まで何事もないだろうと思っていたのに、橋桁・橋板・欄干まで二十余間落ちてしまった。この時渡りかかった人がいたが、一人は橋桁の石に打たれて砕け散って死んでしまった。もう一人は西六条花屋町の者とかで、橋板が落ちるのに乗って下に落ち着き、すぐに息絶えたが、膝のあたりを少し打ち破っただけで、ようやく蘇り、夢心地でふらふらと家に帰った。運の強い者だということで、自分でも大いに喜び、祝い事をしたのももっともなことである。

荷を負った馬たちが橋詰めに多く集まっていたが、多くの馬たちが一斉に恐れて跳ね上がり立ち上がって、一歩も進まず、引いても叩いても進まなかったのは、橋が落ちることを知っていたのかと人々はこれを不思議に思った。
実に不思議なことであった。

The stone bridge at Gojō had also been entrusted with passage at this time, and people thought that even if something were to happen, there would be no trouble until the future age when Maitreya Buddha appears in the world to save all beings. Yet the bridge piers, bridge planks, and railings—over twenty ken in length—all fell down. At that time there were people crossing the bridge: one was struck by stones from the bridge piers, was crushed to pieces, and died. Another person, said to be from Hanaya-chō in Nishi-rokujō, rode down on the falling bridge planks and landed below, immediately losing consciousness. He had only suffered minor injuries around his knees, gradually revived, and returned home in a dream-like state, staggering. It was natural that he greatly rejoiced and held celebratory festivities, being such a person of strong fortune.

Pack horses had gathered in large numbers at the bridge approach, but many of the horses became frightened all at once, rearing up and standing on their hind legs, refusing to move even a single step. No matter how much they were pulled or beaten, they would not advance—people found this strange, wondering if the horses had somehow known that the bridge was about to collapse.
It was truly a most mysterious thing.
