時を移さず間をも置かせず、ひたすらに揺り続けた。五月朔日の昼のうちに五十六度、その夜に入って四十七度に及んだ。揺れ始めの頃にこそ、まだ軽いものであったが、このように激しく揺れるからには、どのような大きな揺れになって家が崩れて押し潰されるのだろうかと心配になる。昔の慶長の大地震もまた大地が裂けて泥が湧き上がり、なおその昔は火が燃え出て人が多く死んだという。今回の大地震も後にはどのようなことがあるだろうかと、手を握り足を宙に浮かせ、起きていても寝ていても落ち着いていることができず、立っていても座っていても我慢できず、揺れ出すたびごとに家々で声を上げて時を告げ、
