何ものゝ仕（し）いだしけん禁中（きんちう）よりいだされて此
哥（うた）を札（ふた）にかきて家々の門（かど）ばしらにをしぬれ【「押し塗る」(「おし」は接頭語。)塗るを強めていう。】ば

棟（むね）は八門（やつかど）は九戸（こゝのつと）はひとつ
身はいざなぎの内にこそすめ
諸人うつしつたへて札（ふだ）にかき家々の門（かど）ばしらに

何者の仕業であろうか、禁中（宮中）から出されて、この歌を札に書いて家々の門柱に貼り付ければ大地震が止むということで：
棟は八つ、門は九つ、戸は一つ
身は伊弉諾尊の内にこそ住む
人々が写し伝えて札に書き、家々の門柱に貼ったけれども、地震は止まず、夜中に四十七回まで揺れた。身分の高い人も卑しい人も、昨日の昼からこちら、食べ物も口にせず、湯水さえも思うままには飲むことができず、「あれやあれや」とばかり言って、揺れるたびに胸を冷やし、手を握りしめ

尻をもじもじさせて恐れ惑っている。この歌は昔の慶長の地震の時に、その時の人が唱えていたと古い人は語っていた。夜が明けてもなお揺れは止まず、ある人が京の町屋が崩れかかっているのを見て、この歌を翻案してこのように詠んだ：
棟は割れ、門は崩れて戸は歪み
身は小屋がけの内にこそ住む
すべてこの歌の意味がどのようなことかは理解し難い。いつであったか疫病が流行した頃、京中の家々に「花かごや」という歌を書いて門々に貼ったことがあった。万葉集の歌に

By whose design I know not, but a document was issued from the Imperial Palace stating that if one wrote this poem on a placard and pasted it to the gate posts of houses, the great earthquake would cease:
Eight ridge beams, nine gates, one door
The body dwells within Izanagi's protection
Though people copied and transmitted this, writing it on placards and pasting them to their gate posts, the earthquake did not stop, shaking up to forty-seven times during the night. Both people of high rank and those of low station, from yesterday's noon onward, consumed no food and could not even drink hot water or cold water as they wished, saying nothing but "Oh my, oh my!" Each time it shook, their hearts grew cold with fear and they clenched their hands,

fidgeting restlessly with fear and confusion. This poem, old people said, was chanted during the Keichō earthquake long ago. Even after dawn broke, the shaking did not cease, and when someone saw the townhouses of Kyoto on the verge of collapse, they adapted this poem and composed thus:
Ridge beams crack, gates collapse and doors warp
The body dwells within makeshift huts
