白 雲の峯（みね）こぐ舟のやくしでら
あはぢの嶋にからすき【唐鋤＝農具の一種。柄(え)が曲がっていて刃が広く、牛馬に引かせて田畑を耕すのに用いる。】のへら【唐鋤の先の方の上に突起した部分。掘り起こした土をかきわけて砕くのに用いる。】
といへるこそわけ【意味、内容】の聞えがたき【理解しがたい】證哥（せうか） 【証拠となる歌】なれといへ

【右丁】
白雲の峰を漕ぐ船の薬師寺
淡路の島に唐鋤の箆
と言うのこそ意味の理解し難い証拠となる歌であると言われている。この歌の類いであろうか、世の愚かな俗人たちが物の呪いとして歌を唱えることがある。その歌どもは大抵は意味もない不完全な言葉が多い。これも人の気持ちを変えて穏やかにする効果がある。腫れ物、おこり（間欠熱）、魚の骨が喉に刺さった時、山椒でむせた時なども皆よくなった例は少なくない。人々がせめて恐ろしさの心の慰めに写し伝えて門に貼ったのも、愚かではあるが道理にかなっている。

This is said to be an example of a poem whose meaning is difficult to understand. Perhaps similar to this poem, ignorant common people sometimes chant songs as magical incantations. Most of these songs consist of meaningless, incomplete words. Yet these too have the effect of changing people's state of mind and making them calmer. There are not few cases where swellings, intermittent fevers, fish bones stuck in the throat, choking on Japanese pepper, and such ailments have been cured. That people copied and transmitted these and posted them on their gates as comfort for their fearful hearts, though foolish, accords with reason.
