大病（びやう）をうけて久しくわづらふものちかきころ産（さん）

むなしくなるもの洛中（らくちう）に数をしらず町屋
の家々をあけて小屋こもりせし間（ま）をうかゞひ

かぎりもなしその日もくれて三日になれどもいまだ
ゆりやまずかゝる所に西山のかたよりひかり物

五月二日になってもますます地震は揺れに揺れて、大病を患って長く苦しんでいる者や、最近出産した女房などは気力を失い、心を失って亡くなる者も洛中に数知れずいた。町屋の家々を開け放して小屋に籠もっている隙を狙って、盗人が入り込んで物を盗んで逃げ走るのはけしからんということで、追いかけて打ち倒し踏み倒す騒々しさは限りもない。その日も暮れて三日になったけれども、まだ地震は収まらない。そのような所に、西山の方から光る物が飛び出して比叡山の峰を目指して行くことのなんと速いことか。

その大きさは貝桶ほどで、赤いことは火のようだった。静かに飛んで山に隠れた。人々はこの様子を見て、どう見てもただ事ではない、世の中が滅んで人類が絶えるだろうなどと言い騒ぐ。大津三井寺の辺りで人々が見たのもまた同じようであった。京の寺町三条の辺りから南を目指して火の玉が飛んだのも、その形は瓢箪のようで尻が細く、色は青く、飛んで行く跡から火の粉のように火が散った。これこそ天火というものである。この上に京中大火事が起きて一面に焼け滅びるだろうと言い出したほどに。

Ten About the Flying Light Phenomena
Even when the second day of the fifth month came, the earthquakes continued to shake more and more violently. Those suffering from serious illnesses for a long time, and women who had recently given birth, lost their spirit and strength, and countless numbers died in the capital, losing their minds. Thieves took advantage of people leaving their townhouse homes open and taking shelter in makeshift huts, sneaking in to steal things and run away. The commotion of chasing them down, striking them down, and trampling them was endless. That day too ended and the third day came, but the earthquakes still had not subsided. Under such circumstances, a shining object flew out from the direction of the western mountains, heading toward the peaks of Mount Hiei with incredible speed.

Its size was about that of a shell bucket, and it was as red as fire. It flew quietly and disappeared behind the mountains. People who saw this spectacle said that no matter how you looked at it, this was no ordinary occurrence, and clamored that the world would be destroyed and humanity would perish. What people saw around Otsu Miidera Temple was similarly the same. A fireball that flew from around Teramachi-Sanjo in Kyoto heading south had a shape like a gourd with a narrow tail, was blue in color, and scattered fire like sparks from its trail. This is what is called "heavenly fire." On top of this, people began saying that a great fire would break out throughout Kyoto and burn everything to ashes.
