七千人であった。成宗皇帝の大徳七年八月、同じく十年八月に大地震が起こり、後宮の女房や大臣以下で死亡した者は五千余人であった。順宗皇帝の時、元統二年八月に地震があった。大明の世に至って、孝宗敬皇帝弘治十四年正月元日に大地震が起こり、人民が多く死んだという。異国や本朝において前例がないわけではないが、たまたまこのような事に遭遇すると、昔は前例もないかのように上下が驚き騒ぐのも、また道理ではないだろうか。仏教の教えによれば、地震には四種類があると説かれている。これも一つの説であろう。この世界の下は風輪であり、その中に水を盛っている。水輪の上がすでに

凝り固まって金輪際となり、その上に土輪があって人間の住処となっている。風輪がわずかに動けば水輪に響き、金輪際より土輪に伝わって大地が動くという。易道の教えでは、陰気が上を覆い、陽気が下に伏して上ろうとするのに陰気に押さえられて揺り動く時にあたって地震となるという。揺れる所と揺れない所があるのは水脈の筋によるという。人の病気に例えれば関格の症と名づけるべきだという。みなこれは陽分の働きによって寛ある所より起こる。上にある時に音があるのを雷と名づけ、音がないのを電という。下にあって動く時に地震と名づけるという。

solidified and become the golden wheel foundation, and above that is the earth wheel, which serves as the dwelling place for human beings. When the wind wheel moves even slightly, it resonates in the water wheel and transmits from the golden wheel foundation to the earth wheel, causing the great earth to move. According to the teachings of the Way of Changes, when yin energy covers above and yang energy lies dormant below, trying to rise but being suppressed by yin energy, it shakes and moves, resulting in earthquakes. The fact that some places shake while others do not is said to depend on the lines of water veins. If compared to human illness, this should be called the symptom of "obstruction and blockage." All of this arises from the workings of yang energy from places of respite. When above and producing sound, it is called thunder; when without sound, it is called lightning. When below and moving, it is called earthquake.
