事にもさやうにはあるましきぞやといふものも有

なく手ふるひ足わなゝき目くらみむねおどりて

重大な日に地震が続いて起こり、大地が裂けて泥の海になるか、そうでなければ火の雨が降って一面に焼け滅びるか、きっと世の中が滅びる境目である」と言いふらした。京中の身分の高い者も低い者も聞き伝えて、血の鼻水を流して恐れ悲しむ者もあり、また「どのようなことがあってもそのようにはならないだろう」と言う者もいた。ある町人で身上もそれほど貧しくなく、何とかして暮らしていた者が、この噂を聞くと恐ろしさは限りなく、手は震え足はがたがたと震え、目はくらみ胸は躍って、うつろな心になった。しかし男たる者が表に出して恐れ迷えば、人から笑われるのも悔しく
