何となく世もゆるやかに侍べりける所に
五月朔日巳のこくばかりに空かきくもり塵（ちり）【一般的に「ちり」は「塵」の字を用いるが原本に表記されている文字は無い故「塵」をあてた】灰（はい）
の立おほひたるやうにみえて雨げの空にも
あらず夕立のけしきにもあらずいかさま【いかにも】
聞をよぶ龍（たつ）のあがるといふものかそれかあらぬか
雲（くも）か煙（けふり）かとあやしむところにうしとらのかた
より何とはしらずどう〳〵と鳴（なり）ひゞきてゆり
いだす上下地しんとはおもひもよらさりけるが
しきりにゆらめきけれは諸人こゝろづきて
初めのほどは世なをし〳〵といひけれとも大 家（け）小（せう）

生れてよりこのかた日のめもみぬほどのやごと

何となく世も穏やかでございました所に、
五月朔日巳の刻ばかりに空がかき曇り、塵や灰が
立ち覆ったように見えて、雨模様の空でも
なく、夕立の気配でもなく、いかにも
雲を呼ぶ竜が昇るというもののようで、それであろうか、
雲なのか煙なのかと怪しんでいる所に、丑寅の方
から何とも知れずどうどうと鳴り響いて揺り
出す。上下とも地震とは思いもよらなかったが、
しきりに揺らめいたので諸人が気づいて、
初めの頃は「世直し、世直し」と言っていたけれども、大きな
家も小さな家もめきめきと動き震える事おびただしく

ありましたので、「さあや、世が滅して今すぐ沼の海に
なるぞ」というほどでございました。京中の諸人は
上を下にひっくり返して、大通りを目指して逃げ出る。
生まれてからこの方、日の目も見ないほどの高貴な
女房達も帯を解き広げ、ざんばら髪で
裸足、着物の袖も構わず、恥を忘れて駆け出で
逃げ出て、大声で泣き叫ぶ事は言葉では言い尽くせないほどです。ある
人がこの中でこのように詠みました。
わが庵の竹の垂木も震えるので
歪んだならばすぐに世直し、世直し

When the world was somehow peaceful and tranquil,
around the hour of the snake on the first day of the fifth month, the sky became overcast, and it appeared as if
dust and ash were rising and covering everything. It was neither
a rainy sky nor the appearance of an evening shower, but indeed
seemed like a dragon ascending and calling forth clouds. Whether it was that or not,
wondering if it was clouds or smoke, from the northeast direction
came an unknown rumbling sound that echoed and began to shake
everything. Neither high nor low-ranking people had any thought that it was an earthquake, but
as it shook violently, everyone realized what was happening.
At first people said "yonaoshi, yonaoshi" (world renewal), but large
houses and small houses alike moved and trembled tremendously,

so much so that people said, "Look now, the world is being destroyed and will immediately
become a swampy sea." All the people of Kyoto
turned everything upside down and fled toward the main roads.
Even the noble ladies who had never seen
the light of day since birth loosened their obi sashes, with disheveled hair,
barefoot, sleeves torn, forgetting their shame as they ran out
and fled, wailing and screaming—it is beyond words to describe. One
person composed this poem amid all this:
Even the bamboo rafters of my humble dwelling tremble
If they become warped, then immediately "world renewal, world renewal"
