司馬（しば）温公（をんこう）は幼稚時より
学問（かくもん）を好み給ひ夜（よ）を以（もつ）て
昼（ひる）につぎて書（しよ）をよみ
給ふ暫（しはらく）寝（いね）給ふ時（とき）には
丸木（まるき）を以（もつ）て枕（まくら）として
臥（ふ）し給ふゆへに少し寝（ね）
入（い）り給ふとすぐに枕（まくら）転（ころび）
はしりておのづから目（め）
さむるなり目（め）さむれば
よろこび起（おき）出（いで）て又（また）書（しよ）を

○司馬温公
司馬温公は幼い時から
学問を好まれ、夜を
昼に継いで書物を読まれた。
しばらく寝られる時には
丸太を枕として
臥せられるため、少し寝
入られるとすぐに枕が転がって
走り、おのずから目が
覚めるのである。目が覚めれば
喜んで起き出てまた書物を
ご覧になる。幼年より
このような厚い志で
あられたため、ついに高官に

進まれ、篤行の美名を
千年に残された。また、この
丸太の枕を警枕と名
づけて、寝る間も慎みを
深くされたと言う。
司馬温公が言うには「黄金を積んで
子孫に残しても、子孫が
必ずしもよく
守ることはできない。書物を積んで子孫に
残しても、子
孫が必ずしもよく読むことはできない。
陰徳を冥々の
うちに積むことには及ばない。」と
子孫長久の計りごととする。

○Sima Wenggong (Sima Guang)
Sima Wenggong loved learning
from his early childhood, and would read
books continuously from night
into day. When he would rest
briefly, he would lie down using
a round log as his pillow,
so when he would doze off
slightly, the pillow would immediately roll
away, naturally causing him to
awaken. When he awoke,
he would joyfully get up and again look at
his books. Because he had
such fervent dedication from
his youth, he eventually rose to high office

and left behind the good reputation of virtuous conduct
for a thousand years. Also, this
log pillow was named the "warning pillow,"
showing that he maintained deep
prudence even while sleeping.
Sima Wenggong said: "Even if you accumulate gold
to leave to your descendants, your descendants
may not necessarily be able
to preserve it well. Even if you accumulate books to leave to your
descendants, your descendants may not necessarily be able to read them well.
Nothing compares to accumulating
hidden virtues in the unseen realm"—
making this a plan for the long prosperity of descendants.
