楊香（やうきやう）が美名（びめい）天下（てんか）にかくれなかりける

楊香は魯国の人で十五歳であった。
ある日、父と共に山へ入ってあちらこちらと歩き、ついに山深く入った時に、荒々しく猛々しい虎が現れて、目つきはすさまじく、爪を研いで向かってきて立ちはだかった。
楊香は、この虎のために大切な父を失うことを恐れ悲しんで、我が身を捨てて父を後ろにして前に進み出て、虎を追い払おうとした。
すると虎も大いに怒り猛り立って、すでに取って食らおうという勢いとなったので、楊

香は心の内で天に祈り願った。「どうか天よ、我が志を哀れみ給いて、我が命をもって父に代え、父の命をお助け給え」と誓って、虎の前に恐れなく進み寄って言った。「汝は人ではないがよく聞き分けて、父の命を助けよ。我が身は汝に与えよう」と近寄ったところ、今まで猛々しかった虎は勢いを失い、尾を垂れて何処ともなく逃げ去った。ここにおいて楊香父子は身を全うして帰ることができた。これより楊香の美名は天下に知れ渡った。

Yang Xiang was a person from the state of Lu and was fifteen years old.
One day, he went into the mountains with his father, walking here and there, and when they had finally entered deep into the mountains, a fierce and ferocious tiger appeared with terrifying eyes, sharpening its claws as it stood confronting them.
Yang Xiang, fearing and grieving that he might lose his precious father to this tiger, resolved to sacrifice himself. He placed his father behind him and stepped forward, trying to drive the tiger away.
Then the tiger became greatly enraged and fierce, showing signs that it was about to seize and devour them, so Yang

Xiang prayed in his heart to Heaven: "Please, Heaven, have pity on my intentions and let me exchange my life for my father's, and save my father's life." With this vow, he fearlessly approached the tiger and said, "You are not human, but listen well and spare my father's life. I will give you my body instead." When he drew near, the tiger that had been so fierce until then lost its momentum, lowered its tail, and fled to who knows where. Thus Yang Xiang and his father preserved their lives and returned home. From this time on, Yang Xiang's good reputation became known throughout the realm.
