孟母
孟（もう）母は至（いたつ）て賢女（けんじよ）なり
母（はゝ）はじめ住（すみ）給ふ家（いゑ）墓（はか）に
ちかき故（ゆへ）孟子（もうし）幼年（ようねん）の
時（とき）なりければ葬（はうむ）るわざを
してたはむれ給ふ母（はゝ）是（これ）
を見て我子（わがこ）をおく所（ところ）にあ

Mencius's Mother
Mencius's mother was an extremely wise woman. The house where the mother first lived was near a cemetery, and since Mencius was still young, he would play by imitating funeral rites. Seeing this, the mother decided this was not a place to raise her child, so she moved the family. This time they lived near a marketplace. Mencius then began playing by imitating merchants. Seeing this, the mother thought this too was not a place to raise her child, so this time she moved their house to beside a place of learning.

After moving there, Mencius began playing by practicing proper etiquette, respecting others, being modest about himself, and conducting himself with proper ritual propriety. The mother was pleased and decided this was the right place to raise her child, so she established their residence there.
