小野湖山先生は、独り我国に於ける一詩聖たるのみならず、実に我郷の有せる
一偉人にして、幕末に於ける憂国勤王の志士なり、而も其伝記にして、極めて世に
知られたるものゝ稀なるは、深く遺憾とするところとす。蓋し先生、居常自己の閲
歴を以て、人に語るを欲せず、たゞ幾多の詩集、能く時にそれが一斑を窺ひ得るに
足るのみ。たま〳〵蒲生重章氏の偉人伝中、狂々先生伝あり、先生の少壮時代を語
ること稍詳なるも、未だ以て尽せりと謂ふべからず。予も亦先年豊橋市史談の著
に方り、聊先生に遺関する資料の蒐集に勉めしも、事多くは志と違ひ、遂に所期の半
をも達成せずして止む。

小野湖山先生の伝記に序す
小野湖山先生は、ただ我が国における一人の詩聖であるだけでなく、実に我が郷土の有する一偉人であり、幕末における憂国勤王の志士である。しかも、その伝記で極めて世に知られているものが稀であることは、深く遺憾とするところである。思うに先生は、平素自分の経歴を人に語ることを欲せず、ただ数多くの詩集が、よく時にその一端を窺い知ることができる程度である。たまたま蒲生重章氏の偉人伝中に狂々先生伝があり、先生の少壮時代を語ることがやや詳しいが、まだ十分に尽くされているとは言えない。私もまた先年豊橋市史談の執筆に際して、いささか先生に関する資料の収集に努めたが、事は多くは志と異なり、ついに所期の半分も達成せずに終わった。

Preface to the Biography of Master Ono Kozan
Master Ono Kozan was not merely a great poet of our nation, but truly a great man possessed by our homeland, a patriotic loyalist during the final days of the Tokugawa shogunate. However, it is deeply regrettable that biographical works about him that are widely known to the world are extremely rare. It seems that the Master, in his daily life, did not wish to speak to others about his personal experiences, and only through his numerous poetry collections can we occasionally glimpse fragments of his life. By chance, there is a biography of "Kyōkyō Sensei" in Gamō Shigeaki's collection of biographies of great men, which describes the Master's youth in some detail, but it cannot yet be said to be complete. I too, when writing the historical accounts of Toyohashi City some years ago, endeavored to collect materials related to the Master, but most things went contrary to my intentions, and I ended up not achieving even half of what I had hoped.
Recently, Brother Ono Hōsui has conducted deep research into the Master's literary remains, and has further examined previously unknown secret manuscripts through the surviving family members, now completing this biography of the Master.
