もなく先生は寒を房州に避け、次で病を獲て逝去せらる。当時讓翁の語るところ
によれば、先生が壮時往復せる文書は、多く之を火中に投じ、蕩然一掃、今殆ど拠
るべきなし、而も居常手記せるところ、決して伝ふべきものなきにあらずと。其家
に伝ふる秘稿なるものゝ貴重なる、以て想到するに難からず。我が豊橋教育会
見るところあり、自らそれが発行の任に当り。予に需むるに序文を以てす。乃ち欣
然処感を記し以て応ふ。

由来三河は東海の中心に位し、幾多の史実に富み。就中明治維新
に際しては、能く勤王の大義を唱へ、方向を謬らざりし人才多し。
其最も著名の士に小野湖山翁あり。翁は実に年少身を素族より起
して、一代の大儒と成り。広く天下の志士に伍し。
皇権の恢復に尽瘁し、地方の文教に貢献し。且つ尾三各藩の大義
一致を全うせしめたる殊功者なり。
是に於てか今や我豊橋市教育会が新に翁の伝記を刊行し。未だ聞
えざりし、其光輝ある閲歴を世に紹介するは、只に一地方のみな
らず、国家風教上に益する所、決して尠からざるべし。
予乏を豊橋市長の職に承く、偶々此挙に会し、寔に欣喜の念に耐
へず。尚希くは将来此地方より幾多の湖山翁を出し。以て君国の
為めに忠愛ならん事を。一言以て序すと云爾。

もなく先生は寒さを避けて房州に避難し、その後病気になって亡くなられた。当時讓翁の語るところによれば、先生が壮年時代にやり取りした文書は、多くをそれを火中に投じ、すべて一掃してしまい、今はほとんど頼るべきものがない。しかし、平素手記していたところには、決して伝えるべきものがないわけではないと。その家に伝わる秘稿なるものの貴重さは、想像するに難くない。我が豊橋教育会は見るところがあり、自らその発行の任に当たり、私に序文を求めた。そこで欣然として所感を記してこれに応える。

私は豊橋市長の職を預かり、たまたまこの事業に会い、まことに欣喜の念に堪えない。なお願わくは将来この地方より数多くの湖山翁を出し、君国のために忠愛であらんことを。一言をもって序とする。

Soon after, the Master fled to Bōshū to escape the cold, and subsequently fell ill and passed away. According to what Elder Jō said at the time, most of the correspondence from the Master's prime years had been thrown into the fire and completely swept away, leaving almost nothing to rely upon today. However, among what he had recorded in his daily notes, there were certainly things worth preserving. The precious nature of the secret manuscripts passed down in his family is not difficult to imagine. Our Toyohashi Educational Association, recognizing this, took upon itself the responsibility of publication and requested that I write a preface. I gladly record my thoughts in response.

Since ancient times, Mikawa has been positioned at the center of the Tōkai region and is rich in numerous historical facts. Particularly during the Meiji Restoration, there were many talented individuals who effectively advocated the great cause of imperial loyalty and did not err in their direction. Among the most renowned of these figures is Elder Ono Kozan. The Elder truly rose from humble origins in his youth to become a great Confucian scholar of his generation. He widely joined with patriots throughout the land, devoted himself to the restoration of imperial authority, contributed to local education and culture, and was a person of exceptional merit who achieved unity in the great cause among the domains of Owari and Mikawa.
Therefore, our Toyohashi City Educational Association now publishes a new biography of the Elder, introducing to the world his brilliant career that had not yet been widely known. This will benefit not only our local region but also contribute significantly to national moral education.
I humbly serve in the position of Toyohashi City Mayor and have had the fortune to encounter this endeavor, and I cannot contain my feelings of joy. I further hope that in the future this region will produce many more like Elder Kozan, who will be loyal and devoted to their sovereign and country. I offer these words as a preface.
