我邦ありての鴻業たる、明治維新に際しては、其登場の人材、固よ
り各地に尠からず。而して其一人者に我吉田藩士小野湖山翁ある
ことを逸し難し。翁は実に勤王憂国の一偉人たりしと共に、我地
方教育のために功労ある一恩人なり。
罪を幕譴に獲て、我地に幽閉せらるゝや。藩黌時習館及宝飯郡国
府町に設られし、三河県修道館等の督学として数年に亘り。又常
に文武両道の為めに貢献し、上下の信望厚く。品性高厲。克く人の
儀表たり。宜なり明治元年始て 車駕の東幸に当たり、抽でられて
徴士となり、尋で権弁事に任せらる。乃ち一躍朝班に列したるが
如きは、単り藩地の誇なるのみならず。且つ天下の異数とす。
既にして隠退しては、詩壇の耆宿として其名内外に鳴り。文教風
化を益する吟詠甚だ多く。毎に尊貴の間に殊遇を享け。高齢九十

我が国にとっての大事業である明治維新に際しては、その登場した人材は、もとより各地に少なくなかった。そしてその一人者として我が吉田藩士小野湖山翁があることを見過ごすことはできない。翁は実に勤王憂国の一偉人であったと共に、我が地方教育のために功労ある一恩人である。
罪を幕府の譴責によって得て、我が地に幽閉されるや、藩校時習館及び宝飯郡国府町に設けられた三河県修道館等の督学として数年にわたった。また常に文武両道のために貢献し、上下の信望厚く、品性高潔で、よく人の手本となった。当然のことながら明治元年初めて天皇の東幸に当たり、選ばれて徴士となり、やがて権弁事に任ぜられた。そこで一躍して朝廷の列に加わったことは、単に藩地の誇りであるのみならず、また天下の異例なことであった。

During the Meiji Restoration, which was a great undertaking for our nation, the talented individuals who appeared on the scene were naturally numerous throughout the country. Among these leading figures, we cannot overlook Ono Kozan, a retainer of our Yoshida domain. The Elder was indeed a great man of imperial loyalty and patriotic concern, as well as a benefactor who rendered meritorious service to our local education.
When he incurred guilt through the Bakufu's censure and was confined to our region, he served for several years as supervisor of learning at the domain school Jishūkan and at institutions such as the Mikawa Prefecture Shūdōkan established in Kōfu-chō, Hōi District. He constantly contributed to both literary and martial arts, enjoyed deep trust from high and low alike, possessed noble character, and served well as a model for others. Naturally, when the Imperial carriage first made its eastern progress in the first year of Meiji, he was selected to become a chōshi (summoned scholar), and soon after was appointed to the position of gon-benji (assistant administrator). Thus his sudden elevation to join the court ranks was not only the pride of his domain but also considered exceptional throughout the realm.
After his retirement, he became renowned both domestically and abroad as a veteran master of the poetry world.
