(峯庵と号す)和田肇(挑川)等の人々文武の志に厚く、以下の人々も俊才が乏しくなかつた、従つて
翁を見るの明あり。併し翁の幽閉の名は安政六年己未より慶応二年丙寅に亘る八年の長きに達し翁とし
ては甚だ不幸であり、藩地としては学田の収穫が多かつた訳である。其三年目の文久元年辛酉春始めて
江戸より妻子を迎ふることを許され、吉田城中大手長屋の一家屋に住はせられた。

廿歳吟壇頗得名。花前豪侠動驚人。誰思斗室幽囚裏。迎得妻兒醉作春。

息正弘、後年その拘禁より幽閉迄の状況を敍して曰く。
「戊午の大獄起るや、共に謀る者相継で獄に下る。一夕藩吏突如として至り、家君を拉し去り、吉田
城に押送し、妻兒を谷中藩邸に幽し、両地の音耗【音信】全く絶ゆ。時に弘猶幼なり出でゝ群兒と戯る、輙ち
皆罵つて曰く汝の父は賊なりと、弘独り走り帰り泣いて母に訴ふ、母嗚咽対へず。年甫て十歳母に従
つて吉田に至らんとして偕に函嶺を踰ゆ。方に春寒、山雨衣袂に滴り、躓き且仆れんとするもの屡々
なりき、母輿中より之を覗ひ歔欷す。小弟は母の懐に在り、呱々として乳を索む、余亦母に向ひ頻に
阿爺を見る何れの日にあるかを問ふ、而も其幽囚にあるを知らざるなり。吉田に至れば則ち老屋一宇
監守する者六七人、儼として檻舎の如し、家君其中央に坐し、書巻数冊を左右にして、夷然として詩

一誦して惨然たるの状目に在り。翁漸く幽閉の緩むと共に藩校時習館の学事を督せしめらる。時習館は
遠州濱松より転封せられた松平伊豆守/信復(ノブナホ)に依つて、宝暦二年に起されたる古き歴史を有し、世間稀数
の藩校として幾多の人才を出し、学事は常に振つてゐた。其附近の大手長屋に翁を住しめた藩主の意向
も蓋し推し難からず、大手長屋は今の西八町市公会堂前「時習館趾」の南側で偶々關根痴堂が謫せら
れて江戸より帰り、共に「菁々吟社」を起し我地方の文雅は大に振ひ、藩老西村、和田、松井等諸士の
如きも一時皆吟誦を事とするに至つた。

At that time, domain elders Nishimura Jiuemon (styled Hō'an), Wada Hajime (Chōsen), and others were devoted to literary and military pursuits, and those below them were not lacking in talent either. Therefore, they had the wisdom to appreciate the old man. However, the old man's confinement lasted for the long period of eight years, from Ansei 6 (1859) to Keiō 2 (1866), which was extremely unfortunate for him personally, though it brought a rich harvest to the domain's seat of learning. In the third year of his confinement, in the spring of Bunkyū 1 (1861), he was first permitted to bring his wife and children from Edo, and they were housed in one of the residences in the Ōte nagaya within Yoshida Castle.

At twenty, I gained considerable fame in poetry circles. My chivalrous spirit before the blossoms would often startle people. Who would have thought that within the confines of this small room prison, I would welcome my wife and children and make it spring?
His son Masahiro later described the situation from the initial detention through confinement, saying:
"When the Great Purge of Boshin arose, those who conspired together were successively sent to prison. One evening, domain officials suddenly arrived, dragged away my father, and sent him under guard to Yoshida Castle. My wife and children were confined in the Yanaka domain residence, and communication between the two places was completely cut off. At that time, Hiro was still young. When he went out to play with other children, they would all curse him, saying, 'Your father is a traitor.' Hiro would run home alone, crying and complaining to his mother, but mother could only sob and could not answer. At barely ten years old, following mother to reach Yoshida, we crossed the Hakone mountains together. It was still spring cold, mountain rain dripped on our sleeves, and we often stumbled and nearly fell. Mother peered out from the palanquin and sighed sorrowfully. My little brother was in mother's arms, crying and seeking milk. I too frequently asked mother when we would see father, not knowing he was imprisoned. When we reached Yoshida, there was one old building with six or seven guards watching over it, stern as a prison. Reading this once brings a tragic scene before one's eyes. As the old man's confinement gradually relaxed, he was made to supervise the academic affairs of the domain school Jishūkan. Jishūkan had an ancient history, having been established in Hōreki 2 (1752) by Matsudaira Izunokami Nobunao after his transfer from Hamamatsu in Enshū province. As one of the rare domain schools in the country, it produced many talented individuals and its academic affairs always flourished. The domain lord's intention in housing the old man in the nearby Ōte nagaya was probably not difficult to fathom. The Ōte nagaya was located south of the current "Jishūkan Site" in front of the West Eighth District Municipal Assembly Hall. Coincidentally, Sekine Chidō had been exiled and returned from Edo, and together they established the "Seisei Poetry Society." The literary culture of our region greatly flourished, and even domain elders like Nishimura, Wada, and Matsui all began to devote themselves to poetry recitation.

When the old man was banished and set out on his northern journey, he had certain warnings in his heart and made efforts not to discuss politics with others. By chance, at an inn in Tochigi, he encountered Matsumoto Keidō (Kenzaburō), a loyalist from Kariya domain in Mikawa. Keidō saw the old man's attitude of wandering only in wine cups and devoting himself solely to poetry and books, became indignant, and left, kicking his seat. Yet it is curious that from that very Tochigi, the old man was soon detained at the Edo domain residence as one of the suspects and sent to Yoshida. Keidō later supported the Nakayama father and son in the incident at Amanogawa in Yamato province...
