燃え上がり、風が立ち波が荒れて、あらゆる方向に鑢のような波が海の隅々まで轟き渡り、まるで蒼天に雪を散らし、波間に灯を点すかのようであった。その炎に触れた魚や海の生き物たちはいたずらに波の花を振り散らし、その臭気は原野の浦々にまで伝わった。仁賢天皇の辛未の年より文武天皇の大宝元年辛丑の間に、都に沙弥智仁という人がいて、一人の男の子を産んだ。むつきにくるまれ這い這いをする頃より、口には葷腥（なまぐさいもの）を嫌い、肌には錦繍（にしきの衣）を辞した。父母ともに奇異なことだと思った。そのためこれを釈氏の門に入れて、玄利老人の弟子とした。毎日『方広経』を読誦し、すでに一万巻の軸を満たしたことにより、すなわち万巻上人と号して、箱根の第四祖とした。孝謙天皇の御代、天平勝宝元年己丑の年、万巻上人は常州鹿嶋の霊社に詣でた。その時、年齢は八十秋（歳）を経ていた。一心に願うところは、ただ多くの生き物たちの横死を悲嘆して、これを祈るためであった。帰り道には星月夜に…

The fish and sea creatures that touched the flames scattered foam upon the waves in vain, and the foul odor spread to the inlets of the surrounding shores. Between the year of Xinwei (辛未) in Emperor Ninken's reign and the first year of Taihō (大宝元年), Xinchǒu (辛丑), in Emperor Monmu's reign, there lived in the capital a novice monk called Chijin, who gave birth to a son. From the time the child was swaddled and crawling, he refused to eat meat or fish, and rejected wearing fine silk garments. Both his parents found this most extraordinary.
