疱瘡看病式序例
一この書は疱瘡の病家において心得ておくべき身近な
事柄を書き記したものである。あの山奥の里の片
隅で、医者にも遠い僻地などに備えておいて、少しでも
患難や死命を救う一助にでもなればと
願うばかりである。もともと文字の読めない一般人や
婦女にもよく理解しやすくするため、さらに修辞を
飾らず、ひたすらひらがなでその意味を
明らかにしたものである。
一和漢の有志ある古書を参考にし、古人の痘瘡を論じた方法の
特に重要なものを取り上げ、また人々が普段手に取る草
紙にある事柄でも心得になるべき事は

Preface to Methods for Nursing Smallpox Patients
1. This book records practical matters that households with smallpox patients should keep in mind. I hope that by keeping this in remote mountain villages and isolated places far from doctors, it may serve as some help in saving lives during times of suffering and mortal danger. Since it is intended for illiterate common people and women to understand easily, I have deliberately avoided ornate language and clarified the meaning entirely in hiragana script.
