現代語訳
高師直は、我が主君が彼に賄賂を贈らないのを見て、彼に恥辱を与えるよう教えた。このため私は主君に説明せず、ひそかに多くの金子や衣服などを送り与えた。これは喜んで彼に贈り与えるためではなく、ただ主君の身にその障りを免れさせようと思ったのである。彼は賄賂を得て頼まれ、我が主君を見て言い訳して罪を謝らせた。このため、主君も彼を殺して死なせることを好まず、ようやく怨恨を解いた。この禍事は、塩谷判官の身上に転じて来る。あの一日公に傷を負わせた時、私はただあの者が死ななければ、塩谷判官の身上も無事であろうと思い、すぐに走って阻止した。今になって後悔し、測り知れぬ禍となったことを変じた。
この事件は、また娘の身の上にかかってくる。それゆえ私の首級を女婿に送ろうと要し、まず妻子に暇を取らせ、冤罪で主人を騙し諂媚する者として告別した。
【欄外】彼が主君に暇乞いすることの何たることか
小道を抄道して去り、妻子より二日前に京に到着し、青年の時に習い覚えた洞簫を吹き起こし、虚無僧の化粧姿に仮扮し、数を尽くしてお前の心中を探り見た。
それで思うに、女婿の手で死に殺されれば、お前の怨恨もすべて解釈される。ただ前の約定に照らして、娘を彼の令息に嫁がせてくれれば、死んでもお前の恩恵を忘れない。合掌して来て求める。主君の危難のためでなければ、死なない性命を、一女子のために送ってしまう。父親の心を、お前は体諒すべきである」と叫び声を上げて気絶した。
托那設と娘は、身を惜しむところもなく、「こんなことになるとは思わなかった。ただ我々が死ぬだけでなく、父親の性命にかかわることになるとは。天の譴責、罪過をどうして免れ得ようか。万に一つ、お許しください」と言って地に倒れて泣き叫んだ。
由良助夫妻三人は、母子の心情を体諒し、痛嘆悲哀した。すぐに本蔵に対して言った。「古より言う、君子は其の罪を憎んで、其の人を咎めず。大凡そ公の冤罪と私の婚姻は、自ずから分別がある。理を論じて行われるべきで、このようであるべきではない。思うに...」

For this reason, I did not explain to my lord, but secretly sent many gold pieces, clothing, and other items. This was not because I willingly wanted to give them to him, but because I thought only to spare my lord's person from that interference. Having received the bribe and being entreated, he saw my lord and made excuses for him to apologize for his sins. For this reason, my lord also did not favor killing him, and finally resolved his resentment. This calamity then transferred to Lord Enya's person.
On that day when he wounded the lord, I only thought that if that person did not die, Lord Enya's person would also be safe, so I immediately ran to stop him. Now I regret it, having caused it to become an immeasurable disaster.
This affair has also come to affect my daughter's situation. Therefore, wanting to send my head to my son-in-law, I first had my wife and child take their leave, bidding farewell as one who wrongfully deceived and flattered his master.

Taking a shortcut by side roads, arriving in the capital two days before my wife and child, I took up the bamboo flute I had learned to play skillfully in my youth, disguising myself as a wandering priest, doing everything possible to probe and observe your heart.
Therefore I think that if I am killed by my son-in-law's hand, all your resentment will also be resolved. If only you would follow the previous agreement and have my daughter marry his son, even in death I will not forget your kindness. I come with clasped hands to beseech you. If not for our lord's peril, I would not give up a life that need not die for the sake of one daughter. You must understand a father's heart." With these words he cried out and fainted.
Tonaose and her daughter, with no thought of sparing themselves, said: "We never imagined such a thing would happen. Not only will we die, but it involves father's life as well. How can we escape Heaven's condemnation and sin? We beg your forgiveness ten thousand times." So saying, they fell to the ground weeping and wailing.
Yuranosuke and his wife, all three, understanding the mother and child's feelings, grieved deeply in sorrow. He immediately said to Honzō: "Since ancient times it has been said that a gentleman hates the sin but does not blame the person.
