その時、既に舅婿の義理を断ち切り、将来決して我が家に来てはならないと言った。火急の底意を知って、情けないことになったと、休書を門前に投げ捨てた。良竹は慌てて拾い上げ、懐に押し込んで、すぐに言った。
「お前は大胆だな。この数日聞けば、浪人者どもが来て、ひそひそと悪事を相談している。私が娘に問うても、知らないと言い逃れをする。今後大事を引き起こしても、見て見ぬふりはできない。娘がお前と夫婦でいるのは、はなはだ心配でならない。幸い良い相手に親を求めて、既に休書を受け取ったのだから、親をしようと思う。私の手立てに任せて、お前は騙されたと思えば幸いだ」
