南隣は仁木播磨守、北隣は石堂右馬丞で、両家は何事かあると言って、家士を屋根に上らせ、提灯を持たせて、まるで明星のように、屋敷に向かって問うた。「お屋敷で大きな武器を打ち合う音や、刀の響きや矢を射る音がしますが、もしや強盗か、あるいは不法な輩が、異常な事件を起こしているのではありませんか。主君が我々に探って聞けと命じました。」大声で叫んだ。
由良助と郷右衛門が聞いて、高声で答えて言った。「我々は決して他人ではない。すなわち塩冶高定の家臣で、亡主の無実の恨みを晴らそうとする四十七人が命をかけて戦っているのだ。このように申すのは、大星由良助、原郷右衛門である。
もともと貴家両家とは、何の恨みもない。誰が敢えて衝突しようか。皆に火事に気をつけるよう教え、また安心して退去していただきたい。ただし隣家との交情を思い、人々を派遣して助けに来られるなら、それは相対して戦うことになる。」
両家の人々は、この話を聞いて、彼らの情義に感じ入り、言った。「我々一同が主君に仕える者として、各々このような心構えを持つべきである。もしお前たちに何かあれば、皆で聞きに来よう。」話し終わると提灯を退け、その人々も下がった。

They placed bamboo poles from the upper crossbeam to the lower crossbeam and cut through all the strings at once. Both crossbeams loosened, and the door panels fell to the ground. Yuranosuke quickly shouted to everyone, chanting the two characters "Tenga" as they rushed into the interior. Also from the back gate, carrying torches and lanterns for illumination, they broke in while the enemy's people were shouting and crying out loudly. Gōuemon and Yuranosuke sat on chairs on both sides, taking command. Although the number of avengers was small, they all fought bravely, risking their lives, making them truly formidable opponents. Yuranosuke and Gōuemon shouted loudly: "You need not strike others violently. Simply consider cutting down the one enemy as the primary achievement." Everyone heard the command and engaged in battle.
The southern neighbor was Nikki Harima-no-kami, and the northern neighbor was Ishidō Uma-no-jō. Both houses, saying there was some serious matter, had their retainers climb onto the roofs with lanterns, like bright stars, and called out toward the mansion: "There are sounds of clashing weapons, sword strikes, and arrows being shot at your residence. Could it be robbers, or perhaps lawless rogues causing some extraordinary incident? Our lord has ordered us to investigate." They shouted loudly.
Yuranosuke and Gōuemon heard this and answered in loud voices: "We are certainly not strangers. We are the retainers of Enya Takasada, forty-seven men fighting with our lives to avenge our late lord's false accusations. Speaking thus are Ōboshi Yuranosuke and Hara Gōuemon.
Originally, we have no grievances with your two noble houses. Who would dare to clash with you? Please tell everyone to be careful of fire, and we wish for you to withdraw with peace of mind. However, if you dispatch people to help out of neighborly friendship, that would mean we must fight against each other."
The people of both houses, hearing these words, were moved by their righteousness and said: "We who all serve our lord should each have such resolve. If anything should happen to you, we will all come to inquire." Having finished speaking, they withdrew their lanterns, and those people also went down.
