墓碑を建造する費用のため、全財産を売り払い、ただ典身金（身売り金）を与えるために、義父を殺してしまった。その金子も返還されてしまい、費用にならなかった。これで彼は実に仕方なく、腹を切って死んだのだ。その時勘平はどれほど無念だったことか。必ずや無限の恨みがあるだろう。あの金子を返還させたのは、この由良助の大きな計算違いであった。哀れにも彼をむざむざと死なせてしまった。私は片時もこの一件を忘れることができず、このため懐にその品物を入れて、片時も身辺から離したことがない。今夜仇敵の家を攻め打つにも、やはり懐に抱いてここまで来た。平右衛門はお前の義弟だから、お前が彼に焼香させよ。」
そう言い終わると、すぐに取り出してきた。平右衛門は受け取って言った。「きっと勘平は黄泉の下で、深くこの厚情を感謝していることでしょう。」その招財布を香炉の上に包み、これが二番目の焼香となった。早野勘平は、涙声で叫ぶように言い、聞く人々はただ胸を刺し破られるような哀傷を覚えた。
四十七人が、一人ずつ線香をあげて皆終わった。ただ聞こえてくるのは、耳をつんざくような人馬の声、太鼓や鬨の声であった。由良助は慌てることも急ぐこともなく言った。「思うに、仇敵の親戚の家が軍勢を率いて戦いに来たのだろう。我々はすでに本願を遂げた。多くの他人の命を傷つける必要はない。ここで討ち死にするより、皆で共に腹を切る方がよい。」
すると桃井若狭介が奥から跳び出してきて、由良助に向かって言った。「今、前門に殺到してきているのは、高師直の弟師安である。お前たちがここで腹を切れば、後世まで伝わって、敵を恐れて支えることができず、ただ汚名を残しただけだと言われよう。恥ずかしいことではないか。早く光明寺に行って、そこで処置せよ。」
由良助は言った。「謹んで教えを受けます。まさに墓前で腹を切るべきでしょう。」
まさに返答している時、勺子司侍郎左衛門、鷺坂伴内の二人が走って進み出てきて叫んだ。「お前たち大星よ、まだ諦めるな！」と言いながら、刀を振るって
