弟（てい）の順（じゆん）也／旧（むかし）館（やど）をかりしは分江（ぶんかう）の入口（いりくち）でありし今年（こんねん）手前（てまへ）は京（みやこ）へ帰参（きさん）を許（ゆる）され生（いき）て帰（かへ）れども高六（かうりく）は
死去（しきよ）せりたゞさへ落暉時（いりひとき）はもの淋（さび）しきに凄然（あはれ）に落日（いりひ）のけしきを臨（のぞ）み昔（むかし）此処（こゝ）て相逢（あひあふ）てはたごや
飯（めし）を手（て）から手（て）へつたへ喫（くらひ）しことあり左遷（さすらへ）の行先（ゆくさき）が違（ちが）ふゆへ別（わかれ）にのぞみ衣類（いるゐ）を取（とり）かへ互（たがひ）に日夜（にちや）

端州駅に還り至る　前に高六と別れし処なり

旧館は分江の口にあり。凄然として落暉を望む。相逢いて旅食を伝え、別れに臨んで征衣を換う。昔記す山川は是なり、今傷む人代の非なるを。往来は皆此の路なり。生死同じ帰りをせず。

端州は張説が岳州に左遷された時、高六と別れた所であり、高六の死を悲しんで作った詩である。高は姓、名は戩、六は兄弟の順である。昔宿を借りたのは分江の入口であった。今年自分は京への帰参を許され生きて帰れるが、高六は死去した。ただでさえ夕暮れ時は物寂しいのに、悲しく落日の景色を眺める。昔ここで相会っては旅籠の飯を手から手へ渡して食べたことがあった。左遷の行き先が違うため、別れに際して衣類を取り替え、互いに日夜思い出そうと約束した。見た山や川はその時の通りであるが、悲しいのは人の世の移り変わりである。別れの時も帰る時も同じこの道であるのに、高六は死に、自分は生き長らえても都へ帰ることもかなわない。

Returning to arrive at Tanzhou Station - the place where I previously parted from Gao Liu

The old inn was at the mouth of Fenjiang. Forlornly I gaze upon the setting sun. Meeting together we shared travelers' meals, facing parting we exchanged traveling clothes. The mountains and rivers I once recorded are still here, now I grieve that human generations are no more. Coming and going all use this same road. Life and death do not share the same destination.

Tanzhou is the place where Zhang Yue parted from Gao Liu when he was demoted to Yuezhou, and this poem was composed in grief over Gao Liu's death. Gao is the surname, his given name was Jian, and Liu (six) indicates his birth order among brothers. The old lodging they rented was at the entrance to Fenjiang. This year I was permitted to return to the capital and could return alive, but Gao Liu has died. Even normally the twilight hour is melancholy, and now I sadly gaze upon the scene of the setting sun. In the past when we met here, we would pass inn food from hand to hand and eat together. Because our destinations in exile were different, when facing our parting we exchanged clothing, promising to remember each other day and night. The mountains and rivers I saw remain the same as they were then, but what is sorrowful is how human generations pass and change. Whether parting or returning, it is all the same road, yet Gao Liu has died while I live on, unable even to return to the capital.
