使いして塞上に至る

単車辺を問わんと欲す、属国居延を過ぐ。征蓬漢塞を出で、帰雁胡天に入る。大漠孤煙直く、長河落日円かなり。蕭関にて候騎に逢い、都護は燕然に在り。

胡（異民族）が降参したことを調査する使者となって、辺境の地に至る。わずかな供を連れ、飾り気なく一台の車に乗って、辺境の情勢を問おうと、属国から居延城を通り過ぎて行く。征く先が蓬（よもぎ）があてもなく飛び散るように、漢の砦を出て行く。折しも帰雁とともに胡の空に入り込んだ。大砂漠の陣屋の一筋の煙がまっすぐに立ち上り、長河に来れば落日が円くなって落ちる。そこで蕭関に来て斥候に出会ったので、「都護はどこに陣を張っているか」と問うと、「燕然山の麓にございます」と答えた。これからまだ遠いことであろうと推量した。大漠は砂漠のことで、胡地（異民族の土地）である。

An envoy reaches the frontier

With a single carriage wanting to inquire about the border, passing the vassal state beyond Juyan. The征 tumbleweed emerges from the Han frontier, returning geese enter the barbarian sky. In the great desert, lone smoke rises straight; along the long river, the setting sun is round. At Xiao Pass I meet a scout on patrol; the Protector General is at Yanran.

Becoming an envoy to investigate the surrender of the barbarians (foreign tribes), I reach the frontier region. With only a few attendants and riding in a single, unadorned carriage, I seek to inquire about the situation at the border. Passing through vassal territories and beyond Juyan Castle, my journey is like tumbleweed scattering aimlessly as I depart from the Han fortress. Just as the returning geese, I enter the barbarian sky. A single column of smoke from a desert encampment rises straight up, and when I reach the Long River, the setting sun appears perfectly round as it sets. There at Xiao Pass I encounter a scout, so I ask "Where has the Protector General set up camp?" He replies, "At the foot of Yanran Mountain." I surmise it must still be far from here. The great desert refers to the sandy wasteland, which is barbarian territory.
