**Right Page** **One Variant (of Sanban)** It is said to grow on Ōshima, at Todoroki Pass (*Todoroki-tōge*), in Chikuzen Province. The shape of its leaves is smaller than the preceding entry (Sanban), and the shape of its flower spikes is likewise similar. Its fruits are slender and elongated, yellowish-brown in color. --- **Left Page** **Nanjoku (南燭)** [Regional names]: Nanten (Edo); Natsuten (Kyoto); Naruten [Literary alternative names]: Sanyō 三葉 [Wahōsho]; Nantenchiku 南天竹 [Tsūga]; Usai 烏菜 [Honkei Hōgen]; Usō 烏草 [Ruisho Sanyō]; Nansōmoku 南草木 [Mukeihidan]; Nantenchiku 南天竺 [Hiden Kakyō]; Taichin 大椿 [same source]; Kokuhanju 黒飯樹 [Kokon Hien]; Yōtōsō 揚桐草 [Kōmoku Sekinan Hatsumei] This plant is widely cultivated at private residences and thrives best in shaded locations. In the western provinces (western Japan), it is said that large trees exist that are suitable for use as pillars. Each stem bears several dozen leaves. The shape of an individual leaf resembles that of the *nezumimochi* (Chinese privet, *Ligustrum japonicum*) but is smaller, and the stem is slender. The leaves do not fall throughout the four seasons; in spring, new leaves emerge, which are not red but rather a pale bluish-green color. In summer, flower spikes of five to six *sun* (approximately 15–18 cm) grow from the tips of branches, opening dozens of flowers. Each flower measures about three *bu* (approximately 9 mm), is white, and has six petals. When in bud, the flower has several sepals that make it resemble a double flower (*yaezaki*); however, when the flower opens, the sepals fall away, leaving six petals. The flowers scatter so readily that they are difficult to observe. Afterwards, fruits are produced: initially green, they ripen by winter into a deep crimson color. With proper care, the fruits may remain on the plant until spring. Among the varieties of this plant, there exists one with white fruits and another with yellow fruits.
