樹の高さは八、九尺（約240〜270cm）に達する。樹皮は白色を帯びている。春になると古い茎から若芽を出し、一茎に五枚の葉をつける。その形は牡荊（にんじんぼく）に似ているが、葉の先は尖らず、縁には浅い鋸歯（ぎざぎざ）がある。一葉の長さはおよそ二寸（約6cm）ほどである。この葉は柔らかいうちに摘み取って食用とする。夏になると葉の間に小さな花が毬状に集まって咲き、のちに実を結ぶ。実の形は人参の実に似て丸く、秋になると黒色になる。葉も秋になると枯れ落ちる。『大和本草』には、葉を食べるとよい、また乾燥させて食べてもよい、茶として用いるのもよい、と述べられている。

The tree reaches a height of eight to nine shaku (approximately 240–270 cm). The bark has a whitish hue. In spring, young shoots emerge from the old stems, each stem bearing five leaves. The leaves resemble those of the *ninjin-boku* (牡荊, *Vitex negundo*), but the tips are not pointed, and the margins bear shallow serrations. Each leaf is approximately two sun (roughly 6 cm) in length. While still tender, the leaves are harvested and used as food. In summer, small flowers open in globose clusters among the leaves, and fruits subsequently form. The fruits are round, resembling those of ginseng (*Panax ginseng*), and turn black by autumn. The leaves also wither and fall in autumn. The *Yamato Honzō* states that the leaves are good to eat, either fresh or dried, and that they may also be used to make tea.
