【Right folio】 **Kuko (枸杞, *Lycium chinense*, Chinese wolfberry)** Known by the following names: *numigusuri* [according to the *Wamyōshō*]; *kuko* [same source; a phonetic shift from the Sino-Japanese reading of 枸杞]; *tōguko* [common name]; *kusai* 苦菜 [according to the *Tsūga*]; *shōsai* 象柴 [according to the *Kōbokushi*]; *shunro* 純盧 [same source]; *senninshō* 仙人杖 [according to the *Sōmokusho*]; *reirō* 霊龐 [according to the *Meibotsu hōgen*; name for the fruit]; *chisei* 地精 [according to the *Igaku nyūmon*]; *tenseishi* 天精子 [cited in the *Kōso hikki* from the *Guangyun*]. The branches and trunk resemble a vine and are soft and pliant. When grown long, they can reach about two *jō* (approximately 6 meters) in length. The plant grows in clumps from a single root. In spring, tender young shoots emerge; the leaves resemble those of the pomegranate (*Punica granatum*) and are soft. In summer, clusters of three or four flowers appear among the leaves. Each flower resembles that of the bellflower (*Platycodon grandiflorus*) in shape, is very small, and is of a pale purple color. Afterward, fruits form. The fruit resembles a cherry (*Prunus pseudocerasus*) in shape, but is larger and somewhat elongated. When ripe, it turns red. The flavor is a blend of sourness and sweetness. This plant corresponds to what Sū Sòng described in his commentary: "That which has elongated fruit and stems without thorns is the true *kuko* (枸杞)." 【Left folio】 (Illustration only; no text)
