**Sōso** 溲疏 (*Utsugi*; common deutzia; *Deutzia crenata*)
Regional names: *utsugi* (from *Wamyōshō*); *utsuke* (Tosa Province); *shiro-unohana*; *unohana*; *hameki* (Satsuma Province)
Although the various commentaries in the *Shūkai* (Collected Commentaries) do not offer a fully satisfactory identification, we follow the older explanations and record *utsugi* here. It is found abundantly in both mountain wilds and around human settlements. The tree grows to a height of seven or eight *shaku* (approximately two to two and a half meters). Branches and leaves grow in opposite pairs, and tender new shoots emerge in spring. The shape of the leaves resembles those of *matatabi* (silver vine; *Actinidia polygama*), being thick, with serrated edges all around. In early summer, the tree forms spikes of two to three *sun* in length at the tips of its branches, bearing five-petaled white flowers. The flowers resemble those of the bellflower (*Platycodon grandiflorus*) in shape and measure approximately four to five *bu* in size. The plant subsequently bears fruit, which resembles in shape the fruit of *rengyō* (forsythia; *Forsythia suspensa*).
