大樹にはならず、枝を多く生ずる。葉は一茎に三葉で、連翹（れんぎょう）のごとく、四月に梢に穂をなして花を開く。形は前条に似ている。実は形が軍配（うちわ形）に似ている。

日光山中に自生がある。葉は溲疏（うつぎ）に似て広く、対生し、五本の縦筋がある。梢に穂をなして、夏に四弁の白花を開く。大きさは六分余りで、うつぎより大きい。

It does not grow into a large tree, but produces many branches. The leaves grow in threes on a single stem, resembling those of *rengyō* (forsythia). In April, it forms spikes at the tips of its branches and opens its flowers. The shape is similar to the preceding entry. The fruit resembles the shape of a *gunbai* (a fan-shaped military commander's baton).

*One variety* ***Fusuma-utsugi***
It grows wild in the mountains of Nikkō. The leaves resemble those of *utsugi* but are broader, growing in opposite pairs, with five longitudinal veins. It forms spikes at the branch tips and opens white, four-petaled flowers in the summer months. The flowers measure over six *bu* in size (approximately eighteen millimeters), making them larger than those of ordinary *utsugi*.
