山のふもとに自生があり、人家でも多く栽培される。樹高は六〜七尺。春に若芽を生じる。葉の形は紫陽花（あじさい）に似て小さく薄く、周囲に鋸歯（のこぎり状の切れ込み）がある。葉が若いうちは紅色を帯びる。夏月に葉の間に花を開く。形は普通のうつぎに似ているが大きく、長さは一寸余りで、淡紅色である。のちに実を結ぶ。熟すと四〜五弁に裂けて、まるで花のようである。

It grows wild at the foot of mountains, and is also widely cultivated in private gardens. The tree reaches a height of six to seven *shaku* (approximately 180–210 cm). In spring, young shoots emerge. The leaves resemble those of *ajisai* (hydrangea) but are smaller and thinner, with serrated edges around the margins. While the leaves are young, they bear a reddish tinge. In the summer months, flowers open among the leaves. The form resembles that of the common *utsugi* (*Deutzia*) but is larger, measuring over one *sun* in length (approximately 3 cm), and is pale pinkish-red in color. It subsequently bears fruit. When the fruit ripens, it splits open into four or five sections, resembling a flower.
