人家に多く植えられて垣根とする。木の高さは一丈（約三メートル）余りに達する。枝葉は互生し、葉の形は扶桑花（ぶっそうげ）に似ているが、大きな切れ込みがあり、わずかに毛がある。夏の間、枝の葉の間ごとに蕾を生じて花を開く。形は蜀葵（たちあおい）に似て、淡紫色であり、花弁の根元は深紅色をなす。朝に開き、夕方にしぼむ。それゆえ『釈名』に「朝開暮落花（ちょうかいぼらくか）」と記されている。果実は指先ほどの大きさで、中に小さな種子がある。

This plant is commonly cultivated in people's gardens and used as a hedge. The tree grows to a height of over one *jō* (approximately three meters). Its branches and leaves grow alternately (*alternate arrangement*). The shape of the leaves resembles those of the *Fūsō* (*Hibiscus rosa-sinensis*), but with large lobes (incisions), and they are slightly hairy. Throughout the summer months, buds form in the axils between the leaves along the branches, opening into flowers. The flowers resemble those of the *Shokki* (hollyhock; *Alcea rosea*) in shape, are pale purple in color, and the base of each petal is deep crimson. The flowers open in the morning and wither by evening. For this reason, the *Shakumyō* (*Shiming*, a Chinese etymological dictionary) records it as the "morning-opening, evening-falling flower" (*chōkai boraku ka*; 朝開暮落花). The fruit is about the size of a fingertip, and contains small seeds within.
