**Right folio:**
*Fusō* *Futsusauge* (Fúsāng/Chinese hibiscus)
*Ryūkyū mukuge* (Ryukyu rose of Sharon) *Fukusō* [cited in *Guangdong Xinyu*]
*Bosatsu kuatsuna* [cited in *Chūzan Denshinroku*]
This plant is not native to Japan; it is introduced from the Ryukyu Islands. As it is a product of warm climates, it is sensitive to cold. Unless it is kept in a sheltered room (*muro*) during winter, it will invariably die. The leaves are arranged alternately, resembling those of the mulberry (*Morus*) in shape but smaller, deep green in color, and glossy on both surfaces. In summer, flowers open from the tips of branches and from between the branches. In form they resemble those of *mukuge* (rose of Sharon, *Hibiscus syriacus*) but are larger, deep crimson in color, and have a lustrous sheen.
