We departed and crossed the Chikuma River, and after traveling one ri we went to Yashiro-shuku in Matsushiro domain. There we found that about thirty houses had collapsed, with twelve to thirteen immediate deaths reported. Compared to Shiozaki village, the ground cracks were narrower and the damage appeared somewhat lighter. From there we traveled three ri to the area around Sakaki-shuku under the jurisdiction of Magistrate Kawakami Kingosuke, where there were no collapsed houses or deaths, though walls and fixtures were damaged by the tremors. The area continued to shake dozens of times day and night, and everyone was camping outdoors. From there we traveled three ri to Ueda town, where conditions were even milder, though people were still camping outdoors day and night. From there it was two and a half ri to

Komoro town, and then three ri to the area around Oiwake-shuku on the Nakasendo highway. There was no mountain rumbling, and after the great earthquake there were only occasional slight tremors from time to time. From there, crossing Usui Pass toward Edo, we heard only that there had been a considerable earthquake on the night of the 24th, and that there had been no earthquakes since then.
The above represents what I observed and heard regarding natural disasters during my official duties, roughly as written. I believe detailed information will be investigated and reported from the actual locations in due course. The above.
