The Yamato Honzo (Japanese Materia Medica) states:
Karatachibana (Ardisia crenata / coral ardisia)
In the dialect of Buko (Edo/Tokyo), it is called "Tachi-hana"
〇 In the Kyoto dialect, it is called "Karatachi-hana"
〇 In the Chikushi (Kyushu) dialect, it is called "Yabukarashi"
Sixth day of Rinsho (6th month), year of Hinoe-inu (1826)
Copied
Recorded in the "Garden Trees" section of the Yamato Honzo
The commentary (Wa/Kan) states:
What is commonly called "Tachibana" in popular parlance refers to this plant. The tachibana (橘)
is a general name for the citrus (mikan) family and is a different plant from this one. Since the
citrus (mikan) is called "Tachibana," this plant came to be called "Karatachibana."
In the Chikushi dialect, it is called "Yabuköji" (Ardisia japonica), and the two are very easily
confused. The yabuköji grows in flat lowland areas; compared to karatachibana,
the leaves differ while the flowers and fruit closely resemble each other.
The Zoho Jikinsho (Expanded Jikinsho botanical encyclopedia) states: The Chinese tachibana (唐橘) is a different plant. It has been passed down through generations as belonging to the citrus (tachibana/kōji) category, but although karatachifruit is commonly called "tachibana," the Chinese character for tachibana (橘) does not apply to it.
The genbianzi (Geranium thunbergii / Genno-shoko) grows abundantly in many places in the mountains and fields. It also grows in the fields of Sugamo and Tokumarugatahara in Buko (Edo). The leaves, stems, and flowers of this plant are all shade-dried, powdered, and taken with hot water. It is effective in treating dysentery and is particularly effective for bloody dysentery. It can also be made into a decoction or finely powdered and formed into pills. All methods are effective. For this reason, it is called "Gennoshoko" (literally: "verified evidence"). Although the Bencao (Chinese materia medica) classifies it under poisonous plants, it is in fact non-toxic. For dysentery, taking this Genno-shoko alone is sufficient; it stops the frequency of symptoms. This is also recorded in the Yamato Honzo as having this efficacy.
[Grass/Herb Category]
Wild Furoshiba (yafu-uro) grass
The Jiuhuang (Rescue from Famine Materia Medica) states: Muuji (Gennoshoko / Geranium thunbergii), Tougyuji
〇 Renkeso
〇 Houtsukehana
〇 Mikoshikusa
Hentoku (Furo / wild geranium)
Haikuwaso
Umegaeso
The Wakan Sansai Zue (Japanese-Chinese Illustrated Encyclopedia) and various other books state:
Genbianzi, muuji, and furoshiba are all recorded as three separate things,
but in fact these three are the same plant. The true Hentoku is a single distinct species.
