『本草綱目』に記載：馬莧には二種あり。
葉が大きいものは薬用に適さない。葉が小さいものは、節と
葉の間に水銀を含むと言われており、この菜は葉が青く、
茎（くき）が赤く、花が黄色で、根が白く、種子が黒い。それゆえ
五行草と名付けられた。
馬莧はその葉が馬の歯に似ているため、馬
莧（バシカン）と名付けられた。そして柔らかく滑らかであるため、スベリヒユ
と呼ばれる。「スベリ」とは「滑（なめらか）」の意の和語である。

According to *Honzō Kōmoku* (本草綱目): There are two varieties of Bakan (馬莧).
The large-leafed variety is not suitable for medicinal use. The small-leafed variety has
mercury said to be present between the nodes and
leaves. This plant has green leaves,
red stems, yellow flowers, white roots, and black seeds. For this reason it is named
Gogyōsō (Five-Phase Herb).
Bakan is named so because its leaves resemble horse's teeth (馬の歯). And because it is
soft and smooth (柔滑), it is called Suberihiyu
in Japanese. "Suberi" is a Japanese word meaning "smooth" (滑らか).
