木香ト稱ル已者アリ此ハ樹ナリ別物也只木
香ト云名アル事未諸書ヲ糺サズ

【草類】
本草綱目には根のことのみを記すが、本草図および
三才図会・草木画譜などに載せている葉の形は
それぞれ異なっており、また節も多くて判別しがたい。
私・環が図に描いたものは日本の木香である。
唐（中国）のものの葉と花の形はまだ見ていない。
外来種の中に木香と称するものがある。これは樹木であり、別物である。
ただ「木香」という名がある事については、まだ諸書を調べ尽くしていない。

The Tashiki-hen, section on mountain grasses, states:
Muxiang (Mokko) Japanese name: Saumokusa (Soumokusa)
Alternate name: Waremokō
Other names: Mixiang [Bielu] Qing Muxiang [Hongjing]
Wu Muxiang [Tujing] Nan Muxiang [Gangmu]

The Bencao Gangmu (Honzō Kōmoku) only describes the root. However, the leaf forms illustrated in the Bencao Tu (Honzō Zu) and the Sancai Tuhui (Sansai Zue), Sōmoku Gafu, and other works each differ from one another, and the nodes are numerous, making clear identification difficult. The plant I, Tamaki, have illustrated here is the Japanese mokko (muxiang). I have not yet seen the form of the leaves and flowers of the Chinese variety. Among introduced species, there is one called muxiang—this is a tree and is a different plant entirely. As for the existence of the name "mokko" alone, I have not yet fully investigated the various texts.
