和漢三才圖會ニ載ス麗春花ヲ美人草トス非也麗春花ハ
千葉罌粟（ヒナゲシ）也本草綱目ノ説詳也似テ罌粟テ不似花罌
粟ハ此レ罌粟ノ紅紫花ノ者に而種（タネ）ヲ分ツ已

歳時記ニ曰
虞美人草褒鉢山谷ノ中ニ虞美人草アリ形如ニシテ雞冠ノ
大也花ナシ葉美奈相對或虞美人ノ曲ヲ唱（トナフ）レハ両葉 撫掌（ムシヤウ）シテ
頗ル節阳ノ如シ當ルカ云々〇予曰此説最未審別種ニ虞
美人草アリ矣未聞

現代語訳
『園史』に曰く、呉の俗にはこれを虞美人草と呼ぶ。
『大和本草』花草類に曰く、国の俗称は美人草という。
虞美人草（ぐびじんそう）
私（梅園）が言う：
『和漢三才図会』には麗春花を美人草とすると記されているが、これは誤りである。麗春花は
千葉罌粟（ヒナゲシ）のことであり、『本草綱目』の説明が詳しい。罌粟に似ているが
花は罌粟とは異なる。罌粟はこの罌粟の紅紫色の花をつけるものであり、種（たね）を分かつ。
【花草】
『歳時記』に曰く：
虞美人草について――鉢山谷の中に虞美人草がある。形は鶏冠（とさか）のようで、
大きい。花はなく、葉は美しく向かい合って生える。ある時、虞美人の曲を唱えると、
両葉が撫掌（むしょう）して、まるで拍子を取るかのようである、と云々。
〇私（梅園）が言う：この説は最もよく分からない。別の種に虞美人草があるのかも
しれず、まだ聞いたことがない。

英語訳
According to the "Enshi" (Garden History): In the customs of Wu, this plant is called Gubijinsō.
According to the "Yamato Honzo," Flower and Grass section: The common Japanese name is Bijinsō (Beautiful Woman Grass).
Gubijinsō (虞美人草, Corn Poppy / Papaver rhoeas)
I (Baien) say:
The "Wakan Sansai Zue" records the Reishunka (麗春花) as Bijinsō, but this is incorrect. The Reishunka is
the Hinageshi (千葉罌粟, double-flowered corn poppy), as explained in detail in the "Bencao Gangmu."
It resembles the poppy (罌粟) but its flowers are different. The poppy refers to those bearing red-purple flowers,
and it is distinguished by its seeds.
【Flower and Grass】
According to the "Saijiki" (Seasonal Record):
Concerning Gubijinsō — In the valleys of Hachizan (褒鉢山), there is a plant called Gubijinsō. Its form
resembles a cockscomb and is large. It bears no flowers, and its leaves are beautiful and grow facing
each other. When one sings the melody of "Yu the Beautiful," the two leaves clap together
as though keeping time with the music, and so on.
〇I (Baien) say: This account is most unclear to me. There may be a separate species also called Gubijinsō,
but I have not yet heard of it.
