From the "Honzō" (Materia Medica), Category of Mountain Herbs: Byakuzen (白前, Cynanchum glaucescens) · Sekiran (石藍) · Donyaku (嫩薬) [Japanese names:] Nokakami / Nubamaki There are several varieties. Though their forms are alike, there exists yet another variety that is slightly different. The individual entries and varieties are described below. The "Yamato Honzō" states: The one who says that Byakuzen has leaves resembling willow, grows at the water's edge, bears flowers resembling Tiger's-tail grass (Toranoo), and has roots like Saishin (細辛, Asiasarum) — this likely refers to a single species. The three plants — Jochōkei (徐長卿, Cynanchum paniculatum), Hakubi (白薇, Cynanchum atratum), and Byakuzen — have become confused with one another, and the matter remains unclear [one character illegible]. I shall await a future scholar to distinguish and separate them, and will follow their conclusions thereafter. For now, I illustrate the three plants separately on the left. Three varieties from my own garden Thirteenth day of the fifth month (Satsuki), Year of the Boar (Hinoto-I) Drawn from life [Herb category] The "Honkō" (本綱, i.e., Bencao Gangmu) states: Byakuzen's leaves resemble willow, and its roots are similar in type to those of Hakubi and Goshitsu (牛膝, Achyranthes), and so forth. In the common parlance of nurserymen and flower dealers (hanako), Byakuzen is universally called Hakubi, and Jochōkei is also called Hakubi — a cause of much confusion. This does not match the illustrations in the "Chikinsho." 〇 In the "Bunkai Roku" (文会録) by Toda Kyokuzan (戸田旭山), it is written: The common assessment of Byakuzen remains unclear; some say it may belong to the Hakubi genus. There is also another variety whose white rabbit's-tail (shiro usagi no o) is taken to be Byakuzen, and whose leaves resemble willow with white flowers said to resemble Tiger's-tail grass — but this is mistaken. Hakubi and Byakuzen resemble one another but are distinct species: Hakubi has white fuzz (hairs) on its leaves, while Byakuzen has smooth leaves. Jochōkei is illustrated in the entry below. Hakubi (白薇) — One variety: Ao-henkei (青ヘンケイ) [Blue/Green variant] Haru-henkei (春ヘンケイ) [Spring variant]
