髙濂草花譜に曰 纏枝牡丹（かさくるま）を
載り疑是可と鉄線花なる云有説
本草旋花時珍云千葉の者
俗呼爲 纏絲牡丹（てんしほたん）と是は皷子
花の千葉の者なり花譜に旋花纏枝
牡丹を別に出せり單葉千葉の者を
別てる又風車花と云者有別種に
而與鉄線同類外種也
本草山草下に云鉄線艸あり
其状形不詳纏枝牡丹は
本朝不聞未有る事を近頃花
戸に以て鉄線花の千葉を爲す
纏枝牡丹と鉄線千葉の者は
俗に謂ふ雪起しと

『和漢三才図会』蔓草類に曰く
鉄線（てっせん）花
本名不詳
鉄線威霊仙
『三才図会』及び
高濂『草花譜』に曰く、纏枝牡丹（からくるま）を
載せ、疑らくはこれは鉄線花なりという説がある。
『本草』旋花、時珍云う、千葉の者を
俗に纏糸牡丹（てんしぼたん）と呼ぶとある。これは鼓子
花の千葉の者なり。『花譜』に旋花、纏枝
牡丹を別に出している。単葉、千葉の者を
分けている。また風車花という者があり、別種で
鉄線と同類の他種である。
『本草』山草下に鉄線草ありという
その状形詳らかならず。纏枝牡丹は
本朝では聞かず、まだ無かったことを、近頃花
戸において鉄線花の千葉を以って
纏枝牡丹となす。纏枝牡丹と鉄線千葉の者は
俗に雪起こしという。

From "Sansai Zue" and
Gao Lian's "Flower Catalog": They record
the "Tenshi botan" (twining peony), and there is a theory that
this is likely the tessen flower.
In "Bencao" xuanhua (bindweed), Shizhen says that the thousand-petaled variety
is commonly called "Tenshi botan" (silk-twining peony). This is
the thousand-petaled variety of the drumstick flower. The "Flower Catalog" lists xuanhua and tenshi
botan separately, distinguishing between single-petaled and thousand-petaled varieties.
There is also something called "windmill flower," which is a different species
but of the same family as tessen, being another variety.
"Bencao" under mountain plants mentions "tessen grass"
but its form is not clear. Tenshi botan was
not known in our country and did not exist, but recently flower
gardeners have used the thousand-petaled tessen flower
to create tenshi botan. Both tenshi botan and the thousand-petaled tessen
are commonly called "yuki-okoshi" (snow-raiser).
