『本草綱目』に曰く、莔麻の形状の説明は『和漢三才図会』と詳しく一致する。
西国の日向・薩摩に多く植えられており、九州の土産品となっている。その
葉がゴマに似ると言う者もあるが、それは別種であろう。『本草綱目』には桐の
葉に似ると記されており、六・七月に黄色の花を開く。その皮は布に織り込むことができ、また
茎を硫黄に浸して砕灯（マッチ棒のような火口）を作り、火をつけるのに大変素早く使える。
『大和本草』では「イチビ」と「莔麻」を別々に記載しており、「イチビ（伊知此）」と
称するものは、すなわち九州の商麻と莔麻の二種である。（この地では）この者（イチビ）を
多く用いる。

The "Honzō Kōmoku" (Compendium of Materia Medica) states that the description of the form of Ichibi corresponds in detail with that given in the "Wakan Sansai Zue."
It is widely cultivated in Hyūga and Satsuma in the western provinces, and is a local product of Kyushu. Some say that its
leaves resemble sesame, but those would likely be a separate species. The "Honzō Kōmoku" states that the leaves resemble those of the paulownia (kiri),
and that it blooms with yellow flowers in the 6th and 7th months. Its bark/fibers can be woven into cloth, and furthermore,
its stems can be soaked in sulfur to make fire-starters (saidō/kindling torches), which catch fire very quickly.
In the "Yamato Honzō," "Ichibi" and "Ichibi (莔麻)" are listed separately; what is called
"Ichibi (伊知此)" refers to two varieties found in Kyushu — the commercial hemp (shōma) and the Ichibi (莔麻). The latter
is the one more commonly used.
