世間の俗説によれば、冬葵子には二種類がある。
一種は葉に縮み（縮面・ちぢみ）があり、葉の表面が平らではない。
これを「岡海苔（オカノリ）」と言い、また「冬葵子」とも呼ぶ。
真物（本物）の方は、葉が平らで縮みがなく、光沢があり、その種子が薬用に用いられる。
また別に、もう一種「冬葵（カンアオイ）」と呼ばれるものがあり、
これは牡蘅（ドクカツ）・二葉葵（フタバアオイ）の仲間である。
冬葵子（本物）は、武州（武蔵国）の神奈川街道沿いに
あちこちに多く生育している。岡海苔草はそちらには見当たらない。

〔Author's note:〕
According to common knowledge (国俗), there are two varieties of *tōkishi* (冬葵子, Winter Mallow).
One variety has crinkled/puckered leaves (縮面, *chichimi*) — the leaf surface is not flat.
This is called *Okanori* (岡海苔, "Land Nori"), and is also referred to as *tōkishi*.
The true variety has flat leaves with no crinkle, possesses a glossy sheen, and its seeds are used medicinally.
There is yet another variety called *Kan-aoi* (冬葵, literally "Cold Mallow"),
which belongs to the group of *Bokkō* (牡蘅) and *Futaba-aoi* (二葉葵, *Asarum caulescens*).
The true *tōkishi* grows abundantly at various places along the Kanagawa Kaidō road
in Bushū (武州, Musashi Province). The *Okanori* plant is not found there.
