現代語訳
の地名をもって総国の号とするものである。意大里国（イタリア）はもともと「シシリア」国王「イタリュス」なる者がその地を開き、初めて農業・養蚕の業をその土地の人々に教えたことによって名付けられた。邏馬（ローマ）国は昔、その開基の始祖「ロムルス」の名によって名付けられた。伊斯把你亜（イスパニア）国もその開基の祖「パニア」の名を用いた。その他、入尓馬泥亜（ゲルマニア）の古名を「アンマニア」といい、【注：ゲルマニアについては上にも述べたように、ノアの曾孫「アシュケナス」が初めてその国を開き、子孫の「アレマン」、別名「テウトク」なる者が初めてその国に王として立った】、また「テウトク」ともいい、阿蘭陀の古名を「バタヒイレテ」といい（上に記す）、第那瑪再加（デンマルカ）の別名を大泥亜（ダニア）というなど、これらはすべてその始祖の名に因って称するものである。考えるに、晋の時代に河南王・葉延がその祖の名を用いて国号を「吐谷渾」と名付けたのも、これと同じ類いである。また、拂即察莫斯哥未亜（フランス・モスコヴィア）、「スイッセルランド（スイス）」等は、その始興の地に因って総国の号とするものである。これは漢の郡名・唐の州名が後に国号となったのと同じであり、また我が日本の総称を「大和」というのと同じようなものである。
西洋の書法（度量衡）
西洋の書法（度量衡の制度）はその種類が多い。「レインランド・マート」【「レインランド」は国の名、「マート」は度のことである】、「セオメエテル・マート」【測量に用いる名称】、「テンメルマート」【工匠の用いる度】などがあって一様ではない。ちょうど我が邦において曲尺・鯨尺・呉服尺などの区別があるようなものである。おおよそ一分を「レインチイ（ライン）」といい、一寸を「トイム（ドイム）」という。「トイム」とは親指のことである。一尺を「フート」という。「フート」とはこれ（足）のことである。また、親指と中指を広げたほどの寸法を「スパン」という。「フート」を二つ合わせたものを「エル」という。「エル」とは臂（ひじ・腕）のことである。そしてその寸法については、一分を一寸とするものもあれば、十二分を一寸とするものもある。尺法についても同様である。彼の地の算法はすべて四・八・十二を基本とする法であるため、こちら（日本）のように十分を一寸と

The country of Italia (Italy) was so named because a certain person called "Italus," king of Sicily, opened up that land and first taught its native people the arts of farming and sericulture. The country of Roma (Rome) was named after its founding ancestor "Romulus." The country of Ispania (Spain) likewise uses the name of its founding ancestor "Pania." Furthermore, the ancient name of Gerumenia (Germania) was "Anmania" [Note: As mentioned above, "Ashkenas," a great-grandchild of Noah, first opened that country, and his descendant "Aleman," also known as "Teutoc," first became king of that land], and it was also called "Teutoc." The ancient name of Holland was "Bataviarete" (as noted above), and Denmark (Denmarca) had an alternate name of Dania. All of these were named after their founding ancestors. It may be compared to the case in the Jin dynasty when the King of Henan, Ye Yan, used his ancestor's name to call his realm "Tuyuhun." On the other hand, countries such as France, Moscovia, and Switzerland were named after the places where they first arose. This is similar to how Han commandery names and Tang prefecture names later became country names, and also resembles how the general name for our Japan is "Yamato."
Western System of Weights and Measures
The Western system of weights and measures has many varieties. There are the "Rheinland Maat" [Note: "Rheinland" is the name of a region, "Maat" means measure], the "Geometeer Maat" [used for surveying], the "Timmermaat" [the measure used by craftsmen and carpenters], and others — there is no single unified system. It is much like how in our country we have the kujirajaku (whale-bone measure), the kanejaku (carpenter's square measure), and the gofukujaku (draper's measure). Generally speaking, one "bu" (smallest unit) is called "Lijn" (line), and one "sun" (inch) is called "Duim." "Duim" means thumb. One "shaku" (foot) is called "Voet." "Voet" means foot. The measurement of the span between the extended thumb and middle finger is called "Span." Two "Voet" combined is called "El." "El" means arm or cubit. As for the specific measurements, in some systems one "bu" equals one "sun," while in others twelve "bu" equals one "sun." The same variation applies to the foot measure. Since arithmetic in those lands is based on the numbers four, eight, and twelve, unlike our system where ten "bu" make one "sun"...
