一般に眼病というものも老眼でかすむのも、もとは同じことである。全く見えないのと少し見えるのとの違いだけなのだと、また工夫をして、笹屋の目薬をたっぷりと買い込み、その薬を混ぜて玉（レンズ）を拭いてみれば、なるほど少しの眼病には、はっきりと見えるという。それでも無性に数を作ってみれば、出来の良いものは全く見えない人にも薄くは見えるということで、早速座頭たちがおびただしく買いに来る。されども普通の人にはこの眼鏡は全く見えず、ただ目薬の匂いばかりがする。

With this idea in mind, he bought plenty of eye medicine from Sasaya, mixed that medicine and wiped the lenses with it. Indeed, for minor eye ailments, one could see clearly. Even so, when he made many of them indiscriminately, even the good ones only allowed completely blind people to see faintly. Immediately, many blind musicians came to buy them in great numbers. However, for ordinary people, these spectacles provided no vision at all - only the smell of eye medicine.
