向島で
「松葉屋の松ヶ枝」
という遊女を
見込んで、それ
より毎晩
通ったが、なかなか
承知しないので、
かの眼鏡屋へ行き
「男がよく見える眼鏡
がありそうなものだ」と
相談したところ、店主はしばらく
工夫をし「随分でき
ましょう」と請け合った。いつの
何時ということになり、
手付金三両置いて
帰った。その日に
なって、都合六両三分で眼鏡
一つ拵えさせ、六両三分は
ちと痛いけれど、松ヶ枝さえ
こちらのものにすれば安い
ものだと喜び、寝入りばな
そっと松ヶ枝に眼鏡をかける。

Around that time,
a man named Yanagiya Oribe
who had been living
a humble life
at the bottom of society
fell for a courtesan
called "Matsugae of Matsuba-ya"
in Mukōjima, and from then on
visited her every night.
However, she would not
consent to him, so
he went to that spectacle shop
and consulted with them, saying
"There must be spectacles
that make men look good."
The shopkeeper pondered
for a while and promised,
"I can certainly make them."
They agreed on a time,
he left a deposit
of three ryō and
went home. On the appointed day,
he had spectacles made
for a total of six ryō and three bu.
Though six ryō and three bu
was rather expensive, he rejoiced,
thinking that if he could make
Matsugae his, it would be
a bargain. At bedtime,
he quietly puts the spectacles on Matsugae.
