「ちょっとお酒を召し上がってください。」
鎌倉より鷺崎藤内左衛門という侍が、常世の古跡を見るため上州に下り、秩父と上州の境の小梨の茶屋で休んだ。その他の旅人も大勢休んで名所の物語をしているうちに興味深いので、佐野村へ立ち寄ることにした。
「これこれ、茶屋の女将よ、佐野村へはまたどのくらいの距離があるか。」
「ここから四里と言います。その昔、佐野の源左衛門という人の古跡はここらで聞きたいのですが。」
「ああ、それはここから四里ばかり東でございます。明日のこととなさってください。」

「やれやれ、今からでは行けない。今朝より猪鼻の宿屋で食べたきりで腹が寂しい。この辺りに飯にかけるものはないか。夜食の赤飯はないか。」

"Please have a little sake."
A samurai named Sagizaki Tōnai Zaemon from Kamakura came down to Jōshū to see the historic sites of Tokoyo. He rested at a tea house in Onashi at the border between Chichibu and Jōshū. Many other travelers were also resting there, telling stories about famous places, and finding it interesting, he decided to stop by Sano village.
"Hey there, tea house proprietress, how far is it to Sano village from here?"
"It's four ri from here. I'd like to hear about the historic site of a man called Sano no Genzaemon from long ago."
"Ah, that's about four ri to the east from here. Please make it tomorrow's business."
